If they’re not spending on Timo Werner, Liverpool certainly aren’t going to splurge on the Wolves winger.
It’s unfortunate, but given Liverpool’s capitulation to Chelsea in the chase for Timo Werner in recent days — a player who fit the desired age and tactical profile, was eager to come, and was available well under market value — the fact of the matter is that, now more than ever, any given transfer rumour involving the Reds is going to be pure fiction. The club aren’t willing to take risks given the volatility of, well everything, and with one of the best playing squads in the world, Jürgen Klopp is comfortable working with what he’s got.
As such, yesterday’s whispers about a potential £50m deal for Adama Traorè can comfortably be categorised as Not Gonna Happen. The Wolves winger is in the middle of his best ever season at the top level, having progressed from an incredible dribbler with zero end product to a consistent creative threat and big game impact player, but there is absolutely no chance a player with a third of Werner’s output is going to be considered value for the same money by the club.
The player can desire the move as much as he wants, and it would undoubtedly be a treat to watch the Spaniard stretch the fabric of a red shirt to its breaking point in the coming years, but thanks to billionaire owners and shady Jorge Mendes dealings Wolves don’t need to sell, and Liverpool are absolutely not in a buying mood.
If there are to be any arrivals at Anfield this summer, they will take place only after the club have managed to move on some of its less vaunted assets, and, in all likelihood, be far less spectacular than one would have previously expected of a title winning side that notched a £42m profit last year.
