The defender scored a brace

Liverpool were on their way to a routine win over Brighton & Hove Albion until the 76th minute. And then all hell broke loose. Alisson, the Reds’ stalwart of a goalkeeper, uncharacteristically handled the ball well outside of the box. While reserve keeper was still setting the wall, Lewis Dunk cheekily slotted the free kick after Martin Atkinson blew his whistle.

It wasn’t easy, but the Reds did the business. Virgil van Dijk reacted after the game.

“Obviously we’re disappointed with the way we ended the game,” the defender told Liverpoolfc.com.

“We conceded a bit of a strange free-kick, the red card for Alisson, and we should have done better. But it’s not easy to play every couple of days and make sure we are more than 100 per cent.

“But we try to do that. The beginning of the first half was good, towards the end of the first half I think we should have done better. But it’s something we have to look at and try to improve.

“They are a very good side, you have to give them credit. They played well, brave and tried to get out of our press and at times it worked. So you have to give them credit. But we wanted the three points and got them.

“We have to show character, we have to fight. It was not an easy game, especially at the end. We had to dig deep and we did.”

“I’m looking forward to every game and obviously Wednesday is going to be a good one. Everyone is looking forward to that,” added the Netherlands international.

“What we have to do now is make sure we’re more than 100 per cent on Wednesday. Luckily, we have some time to recover and make sure we’re ready.”
