The goal scorers got all the credit after last night’s Liverpool performance, but Van Dijk wanted to highlight his center back partner instead.

Goals change matches. And boy, did we have some absolute beauties to choose from last night.

Do you like free kicks from young Scousers? Trent Alexander-Arnold had you covered. How about phenomenal vision and clinical finishes? Fabinho, Mohamed Salah, and Sadio Mané all had you covered. Thunderbastards from distance that nearly burn a hole in the net? Fabinho, again, got ya.

But it wasn’t just on the attacking side of things where Liverpool showed their superiority. For the first time since Opta started keeping track of these things in 2008, a Premier League side failed to have a single touch in the opposition box. Crystal Palace managed just three shots, all speculative and from range, and failed to hit the target with any of them.

Naturally, Virgil van Dijk wanted some love for the defensive effort. When the club listed out potential Man of the Match candidates—all goal-scorers from last night—Van Dijk was quick to counter with a cheeky reply:

I mean, it’s a good shout Virgil. Especially since Liverpool’s #4 seemed just as interested in attacking as defending, as evidenced by winning the free kick that led to Trent’s opener.

Then again, Fabinho played an outstanding match on both sides of the ball. He broke up play when needed, and added a goal and an assist. And you can have a good debate over whether the goal or assist was more impressive.

Fabinho probably deserves Man of the Match honors, but it was a fantastic team effort all around. Now we can kick back, and see if Chelsea do the business tonight.
