Mikkel Damsgaard impressed during the Euros.
The lights were barely shut off at Wembley following England’s penalty shootout defeat to Italy in the 2020 European Championship finals before rumours started swirling about some of its top performers. Mikkel Damsgaard impressed for Denmark. The 21-year-old winger scored twice for the Danes, making him the youngest Danish player to ever score at the Euros. One of those goals was in their semi-final defeat against England at Wembley, which clearly caught the attention of many.
Now the Sampdoria forward is being linked to a move to Anfield this summer. Damsgaard only recently arrived in Italy, joining Sampdoria last season. If Liverpool or other European teams want to prise him from the Serie A club, they’ll have to shell out the cash.
According to La Gazetta dello Sporto, the club has made it clear to the Liverpool transfer committee that they won’t part with Damsgaard for less than £34m.
At 21-years-old, Damsgaard could be part of Klopp’s plans to start preparing for the eventual departures of his famous but aging front three.
However, it’s worth noting that after every big international tournament, there is always speculation about the players who impressed. Directly after a promising performance in an international tournament is when a player’s fee is also inflated to its highest, which Liverpool will surely know.
While Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah are all staying with the club, along with Diogo Jota, it will be necessary for Klopp to plan for departures in the coming transfer windows. Additionally, Salah and Mane will be missing for the most important and notoriously difficult part of this season when they head back to their countries in January to play in the African Cup of Nations.
It’s likely that a winger will be brought into the team this summer, but so far, there is little to substantiate the rumour that Damsgaard will be that winger.
