The Biggest Shaqtus probably wants some game time.
The 2020 summer transfer window was supposed to be the exit for many a Liverpool FC fringe player. However, due to COVID-19 affecting many clubs’ ability to spend, that turned out to be not the case. For one Xherdan Shaqiri, this summer could be the time for greener pastures.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference previewing Switzerland’s game against Italy on Wednesday at the Olympic Stadium, Shaqiri said:
“At the moment, I don’t really want to talk about it.”
“I have a contract there and after the Euros, of course, I will talk to my agent.
“We will look at the situation and then we will decide how to proceed.”
In his three years here, Shaqiri has mostly been a bench option, but has recently struggled for regular game time, making just seven starts last season under Jurgen Klopp. In total, he has made just 18 Premier League starts since his £13million transfer from Stoke, partly due to injuries, but it also didn’t look like Klopp really trusted him to get onto the pitch and do the job for him.
Now 29, Shaqiri still has two years left on the five-year deal he signed His £80,000-a-week salary could prove difficult to move as Liverpool prefer a permanent cash deal and do not want to have to subsidise his salary on a loan deal. Lazio, who were interested last summer, remain keen under new boss Maurizio Sarri.
