According to reports, Jurgen Klopp will not sanction additional moves away until the end of the season.
In recent days there have been rumblings about Roma’s interest in Liverpool winger Xherdan Shaqiri. The Serie A side, currently sitting in 5th—level on points with Atalanta for the final Champions League qualifying spot—were reportedly interested in bringing in Shaqiri on a loan move until the end of the season.
That said, it seems as if Shaqiri will not be making a move away, at least until next summer. After the loan moves away for Rhian Brewster and Nathaniel Phillips, Jurgen Klopp has apparently decided to not allow any additional departures for the title run-in. The report comes from the generally reliable David Maddock of The Mirror, so we can probably take this at face value.
The Swiss international will have been disappointed with his lack of playing time this season, both because of niggling injuries and being down the pecking order of Klopp’s attacking options. Indeed, Shaq only has 178 minutes of playing time in all competitions for Liverpool this campaign, with just two starts.
Considering the addition of Takumi Minamino, it seems a safe bet that Shaqiri will not be in line for too many more minutes in the second half of the season. However, at 28-years-old, and seemingly a good presence in the dressing room, Klopp probably wanted to keep the title-winning and experienced winger around Melwood. And if called upon—whether to kill a game, or put in a decent cross—Shaqiri has been a useful option for the Reds since joining last year.
