The Atletico mdifielder has a £128 million release clause, so take this with a healthy serving of salt.

A report from Spanish outlet AS claims that Atletico Madrid’s Saul Niguez has told the reigning Spanish champions that he wants to leave and that Liverpool FC is apparently hot on the trail of the talented midfielder.

A mainstay in Atletico Madrid’s midfield since he broke through into the first team in 2012 at the tender age of 17 years old and 108 days, the 26-year-old is an extremely versatile midfielder, capable of playing every position in midfield and has even filled in at the full-back position in emergency situations. Despite playing in Diego Simeone’s defensive system, he’s a player who’s capable of playing a possession-based style and can move the ball forward with intent, or arrive late into the box for a shot on occasion.

He is reportedly valued by the Spanish champions at €40m (£34.4m) and El Cholo and company are willing to sell the midfielder if they receive a great offer for the Spaniard.

To me… this doesn’t really seem like a plausible transfer rumour simply because it involves a Spanish man willingly trading the sunshine of Madrid for Liverpool. (Thiago doesn’t count – he had already been living in Munich for years.) This… feels like a rumour made up because Liverpool needs a Gini Wijnaldum replacement. Wouldn’t mind if it was true though.
