Thiago Alcantara has said goodbye to his teammates and expects to join the Reds if you believe the rumours.
In the land of rumour mongering, there are some common places that transfer chatter comes from, and perhaps none is more common than that of an agent looking to get a move or better deal for his client.
And t seems fairly safe to say that such is the case when it comes to the recent spate of rumours surrounding Thiago Alcantara, Bayern Munich’s 29-year-old, injury-prone Spanish international midfielder.
Over the past week, outlets including Sport in Spain and Bild in Germany have claimed Liverpool are at least seriously interested in the player—and that the player is very much interested in joining the Reds this offseason.
In another world, perhaps, were he five years younger or if he was available on a free transfer—and also probably if we weren’t so injury prone and we weren’t in the midst of a pandemic—it would be easy to see the appeal.
Thiago is, by any measure, an extremely gifted player. But he’s 29 years old, he’s injury prone, and he’s still got a year left on his current contract at Bayern Munich and a not insignificant wage packet.
If the transfer chatter were restricted to Germany, then, one might imagine that Bayern Munich were the ones putting their feelers out here—trying to see if there was any market for the midfielder this summer.
With the rumours also gaining a foothold in Spain, though, the agent—either looking to force Bayern’s hand and get his client a lucrative new multi-year deal or looking to induce another team to move for him—seems likeliest.
Liverpool aren’t interested in Thiago. His age, wage, and injury record means he simply doesn’t match the profile. Especially in the midst of a pandemic. But it could certainly be useful for his agent to say they are.
