With no big money transfers expected this summer, Mbappé 2020 is over. Say hello to Mbappé 2021.

With football currently on hold due to coronavirus and nobody sure exactly when and how it will return, the chance of Kylian Mbappé ending up at Liverpool this summer has dropped from around zero percent to, well, a hard zero percent.

In fact, it’s unlikely that any club—even the likes of Real Madrid, widely assumed to be Mbappé’s next destination—will be willing to spend enough this summer to make it worth Paris Saint-Germain selling the 21-year-old French superstar.

According to one French outlet, though, there’s a reason Liverpool are keeping in touch with the player: next summer. When Mbappé will have a year left to on his contract and, presumably, football’s finances will be back on sounder footing.

That’s the story according to Le10Sport, who still have Madrid heavy favourites to land the striker but who suggest rumours such as the recent one about Jürgen Klopp having a chat with Mbappé’s dad are all about the Reds staying in the mix.

Stay in the mix, stay an option, and wait for 2021 when football’s back and who knows what’s going on at Real Madrid, who may be rich but also at times can be a volatile place where coaches come and go and plans change quickly.

Of course it’s not an angle that takes any real insight to throw out there, and that makes us rather dubious of it—beyond that we’re naturally dubious of any Mbappé to Liverpool talk. Still, for those holding out hope it’s a thread to grab on to.
