It could only be an insulting bid if Liverpool actually made it and we don’t believe for a second that they have.
We’re on record as being about as certain as one can get that any talk of Kalidou Koulibaly joining Liverpool this summer is either the work of the player’s agent or club looking to get a big move done for the 29-year-old centre half.
By next summer, the player will be 30 and down to two years left in his current contract, which means that coronavirus or no this may be the last chance for Napoli—who are likely to miss the Champions League—to cash in on him.
Liverpool, meanwhile, aren’t expected to spend big this summer and expect to go into next season with Joe Gomez and Joël Matip two and three on the centre half depth chart. Which brings us rather belatedly around to today’s story.
That Liverpool have as of today submitted a firm, formal, actual bid to Napoli for one Kalidou Koulibaly. A bid that has insulted Napoli as it’s reportedly, if one believes Corriere dello Sport in any case, in the €60-65M range.
In case you need it, this is where we’re obligated to remind you Liverpool walked away from Timo Werner for less than that, and Werner plays at a position of greater need and is a little more than five years younger than Koulibaly.
Also, the Italian outlet claim Napoli still want €100M—though it’s possible they’re signalling they’d accept an offer in the €75-80M range, or they’re trying to get a club that is interested at around €60M to think there’s a bidding war.
In any case, we’re getting a tired of having to regularly talk about Koulibaly when there’s no chance that he joins Liverpool this summer, though a claim—albeit a very dubious one—of an actual offer seems worth acknowledging.
