It doesn’t mean Liverpool aren’t interested, but a deal might not be as close as many believed.
With Liverpool fans caught up being concerned by the Reds’ first back-to-back losses of the season following Premier League defeat to Watford and an FA Cup ousting at the hands of Chelsea, it’s been a few days now since we’ve heard about Timo Werner.
Today, though, we’ve got a new story doing the rounds. And it’s a bit of a dashing of cold water after spending the past month listening to talk of Werner’s move to Liverpool being all but a done deal, with the player’s current club saying there’s been no approach.
“There aren’t many things that favour him leaving us,” RB Leipzig sporting director Markus Krösche told Bild when pressed on all the recent chatter claiming a summer departure for Werner is all but certain. “There has been no contact at all.
“It’s normal that Timo would be the focus of other clubs. He’s playing a very, very well. But Timo has a long-term contract and there are not many things that favour him leaving us. We play in the Champions League, have a super coaching staff, and we are ambitious.”
Recent stories have claimed Werner’s £50M release clause—which might be even lower according to some reports—expires at the end of April rather than the end of the season, meaning that any deal may have to be wrapped up in short order.
And until today at least, almost every story seemed to further fuel a belief that that is exactly what would happen. It still might, of course, but taken at face value, Krösche’s statement suggests that any deal might not be as close as many thought it was.
