There are many unanswered questions to how this season will be resolved, but one clear message is that it will be resolved sooner if we all do our part by staying at home.
In uncertain times, many of us just want answers, even bad ones. A known undesirable outcome is somehow less scary than an unknown outcome that could go either way.
Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait longer—perhaps much longer—for any clarity from the Premier League about the direction the rest of this season takes (if it can even be completed).
Despite not having much to say, the Premier League, along with the FA, EFL, and Football Supporters’ Association, released a joint statement:
COVID-19 has presented a hugely challenging and uncertain time for everyone and our thoughts are with all those directly affected by the pandemic. The Government’s message is clear: stay at home, protect the NHS, save lives.
We are all committed to getting back to playing the game we love – but only when it is safe to do so. Amid the current uncertainty, supporters will understandably have a number of questions relating to the season and the clubs they follow, and there are no quick answers to how and when we will return to what used to be our football normality.
The Football Supporters’ Association (FSA), Premier League, EFL and The FA want to reiterate that clubs and their supporters have a vital role to play in supporting the Government’s guidance and ensuring community strength and solidarity. While there is no football, our sport can still play its part.
The statement, which can be read in full here, emphasized the role that footballing organizations, clubs, and supporters are doing to help the current situation.
The only thing that we can be sure of, is that this will require patience and a steadfast approach to continue social distancing until the medical experts and international health organizations say it’s safe to come out again.
If we want football again—and we do!—we all have a part to play.
