The popular squad player heads to France in search of playing time with the Reds recouping a £9.5M transfer fee.
After three seasons spent on Merseyside that saw Swiss attacker Xherdan Shaqiri collect a Premier League, Champions League, Super Cup, and Club World Cup with Liverpool, the 29-year-old has today completed his transfer move to Lyon in Ligue 1.
The popular squad player leaves the Reds in search of increased playing time after having made a number of memorable contributions to Liverpool’s successes in recent seasons but with struggles with injuries and consistency too often limiting his role.
Having triggered his £13.5M release clause to sign him from Stoke City in 2018, Liverpool will recoup £9.5M from his sale to Lyon after the two clubs agreed a fee over the weekend and Shaqiri passed his medical and completed the move on Monday.
In addition to his medals, Shaqiri made 63 total appearances for the Reds in three seasons at the club, recording eight goals and nine assists. He will perhaps be most fondly remembered by fans for his role in Liverpool’s comeback against Barcelona.
After finishing fourth in Ligue 1 last season, Lyon and their stocky new signing will participate in the Europa League in the 2021-22 season as they target a top three finish in the league and with it Champions League qualification.
