Following delays due to Covid-19, Anfield Road expansion is set to begin in earnest next week.
Having been pushed back by a year and following a second round of public consultations and a renewal of planning permissions, Liverpool are set to begin the next round of stadium expansion with a rebuilding of the Anfield Road end.
A groundbreaking ceremony is set for next week, when construction on the new stand will begin behind the existing Anfield Road end. The process will be similar to the recent Main Stand expansion that sought to avoid any impact on matchday attendance.
“We needed certainty for this project to progress and are now in a position to be able to move forward,” read a statement from managing director Andy Hughes. “We began this journey in 2014 and are grateful to everyone for the contributions they have made to bring the project to this stage.
“We have been clear from the beginning that in order for this expansion to go ahead we needed the co-operation of local residents and the community to successfully navigate the complex planning landscape, and to ensure the project is financially viable.”
The new, expanded Anfield Road end is expected to be completed by the summer of 2023, at which point 7,000 seats will have been added behind and above the existing lower tier to bring total stadium capacity to 61,000.
