Whenever the current season ends, Jürgen Klopp is said to be content with replacing any departures with youth.
Liverpool are set to see Adam Lallana depart when the season ends—whenever it does end—with his contract set to expire this summer, but despite that and an aging midfield core there are no plans for an overhaul at the position.
In fact, according to The Athletic’s James Pearce, it could be that no new midfield players will arrive this summer, with Klopp’s first choice being to use young Curtis Jones as Lallana’s replacement in his Liverpool squad next season.
The manager is also said to have faith in Naby Keïta coming good and having a larger role to play in the team moving forward, and between Keïta and Jones it would mean that new midfield signings are not a priority for the club.
With a group whose core consists of 34-year-old James Milner, soon to turn 30 Jordan Henderson, 29-year-old Gini Wijnaldum, and relatively youthful 26 until he’s 27 (in October) Fabinho, though, change will have to come eventually.
Just not, it would appear, quite yet, with plans to keep the group together and supplement it with players already on the books and leaving fans hopeful of a big-name signing to pin their hopes on forward and RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner.
