Captain Jordan Henderson says that Liverpool must get better every game and every week from here out.
Liverpool are top of the table, ten points clear and with a game in hand. They have the best defensive record in the league, the second best attack, the best goal differential. They’re into the knockout rounds of the Champions League.
So what comes next? Well, they have to get better, be better, do better. That’s the message captain Jordan Henderson is sending for the new year. That no matter what the Reds have done so far, to get where they want to go they must improve.
“Regardless of all the external talk around us at this moment, I can promise Liverpool supporters that we won’t change our approach at any point during this campaign,” he said of recent talk that the title is already all but decided.
“Until the very last kick of the very last game our only objective is to be better in the next match than we were in the one before it. It’s been an attitude that’s served us well until now and there is no chance we’re going to change it.”
Of course, nobody would expect anything less. Not from Henderson or manager Jürgen Klopp of from anyone else in this current group of Liverpool players—that drive, that attitude, is why they’re ten points clear with a game in hand right now.
That attitude is at the root of how this group has managed to get the result against every sort of opponent in every sort of match. That mentality. And no matter what talk there might be outside the dressing room, it isn’t going to change.
“It wasn’t that long ago there was a lot of focus on our lack of clean sheets,” Henderson added. “I can tell you now that mattered to all of us, not just the defenders. Our expectation of ourselves was to do better in that area.
“But we don’t feel content about it—we want more. Set a standard, meet it, then look to exceed it. Never stop focusing on what we can do better. That’s our mantra.”
