It might be time for the likes of Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones, and Neco Williams to get a chance to impress.
Liverpool have wrapped up the league. Liverpool have looked a little flat since wrapping up the league. Liverpool are in the midst of a stretch where they play games every three days.
Add it all up and you might expect a bit of rotation and experimentation from manager Jürgen Klopp, who certainly wasn’t ruling it out ahead of Liverpool’s Wednesday evening kickoff against Brighton.
“When we play a game and you know in three days it’s the next game, I can never really avoid the thoughts immediately about the line-up,” Klopp said ahead of the match.
That could mean a chance for 19-year-old Neco Williams to stake his claim as backup to both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson next season. Or it could mean minutes for Curtis Jones in midfield. Or Harvey Eilliott in attack.
On the other hand, Klopp admits that the quick turnaround makes it harder to spend time in training getting new players fully up to speed and integrated into the established group.
Still, given the stage of the season and Liverpool’s position, while Klopp will still want to win—and to chase the English top flight points record—there isn’t ever going to be a better time to give some of his youth and fringe players a chance.
“The problem is with the three days, three days, three days, three days, you only have two days in between the games, plus travel,” he added. “It’s not cool but, how you said, it’s for pretty much all the teams similar or the same.”
