The Liverpool captain could end up moving on after stories emerged suggesting a new contract isn’t a priority for the club.
There is a strong case to be made for Jordan Henderson being the most successful captain Liverpool have had in the Premier League era, and his importance to Jürgen Klopp’s Premier League and Champions League winning side has been driven home by the clear hole left in the squad any time he hasn’t been available.
Jordan Henderson is also 31 years of age, with a contract that expires in summer 2023, at which point he will be 33 years old. And Liverpool are a club that have shown themselves to be determined to not get tied down overpaying for aging players who may not be able to contribute on par with their wage packet.
One only has to look to the departure of Gini Wijnaldum for confirmation. So in the midst of talk about the club prioritizing new contracts for the likes of Alisson Becker and Mohamed Salah, today we have another story. A story about the club not prioritizing a new contract for Henderson and the captain’s potential departure.

All have offered up that while there has been contact between the club and Henderson’s representatives, a new contract might not be the end result—and that the likes of Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are watching.
While some have suggested a departure this summer is possible, it seems likely Henderson will remain at the club for the upcoming season regardless. It’s also perhaps likely this is all an attempt from Henderson’s camp to motivate the club to make a new contract for him a top priority this summer rather than waiting.
If there’s no positive movement, though, we could well end up in a situation where this will be Henderson’s last year at Anfield with the player heading to the continent next summer for a last payday while the Reds seek to recoup something rather than allowing the player to leave on a free when his contract expires.
