Sterling has been dropped by the team as a result of the row.
It appears as though the hard feelings between Joe Gomez and Raheem Sterling carried over from their hotly contested match on Sunday to the England training ground on Monday. It’s not surprise that after such an intense match that there may be some problems between players from the opposing teams less than 24 hours later.
Gareth Southgate has dropped Sterling from the team for the game against Montenegro following the bust up. In a statement, the England manager said:
“We have taken the decision to not consider Raheem for the match against Montenegro on Thursday. One of the great challenges and strengths for us is that we’ve been able to separate club rivalries from the national team. Unfortunately the emotions of yesterday’s game were still raw.”
According to The Telegraph, Sterling confronted Gomez upon arriving at St. George’s Park for training and attempted to goad him into a physical confrontation. Gomez refused to re-engage in the fight from on the pitch, and Sterling eventually apologized to the team for his behavior.
He was not sent home from duty, and will likely be considered for the weekend qualifier against Kosovo.
