The Scotsman has been one of the lynch pins in the Liverpool system.
Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold provide a crucial component of Jurgen Klopp’s system. Their high octane performances on either side of the pitch contribute to both the attack and the defense and serve to make the pitch feel twice as wide as it actually is.
The two of them combined for another spectacular goal on Sunday. It started with Alexander-Arnold switching play with a pinpoint pass to Robertson, who collected the ball and quickly served it up for Salah to nod home for Liverpool’s second.
Robertson insists that though the duo is known for their attacking prowess, that equal emphasis is placed on defensive techniques.
“Me and Trent had big numbers last season in terms of contributing to goals and stuff, but it was more than that,” Robertson said.
”Defensively we were also very good and this season we’ve tried to do the same. We just try and produce high standards in every single game – it’s not always possible. Trent is 21 and he’s producing performances unbelievably and hopefully he keeps that up. Hopefully the team keeps it up because we’re doing well so far and there’s confidence in that changing room.”
Key to Liverpool’s title run could be the continued fitness of our two fullbacks. Robertson is sitting out Scotland’s Euro qualifiers this week because of an ankle problem, which has the potential to take him out of the running for the Crystal Palace game after the break.
