The Liverpudlian got his chance to shine at left back against Shrewsbury Town
Over the past several years, Liverpool’s academy has brought through a core of local talent. Trent Alexander-Arnold seized his opportunity with the first team during an injury crisis, and never looked back. Curtis Jones has seen repeated opportunities during cup competitions this season, and has played well enough to earn a spot on the bench during Premiere League matches. Adam Lewis is the latest Scouser to seize the opportunity given.
Lewis, the 20 year old from Walton, has been a mainstay with U23 squad, serving as a captain. While he originally started off as a left-sided winger, Lewis has transitioned to a left back role over the past year. The youngster impressed enough during preseason training to earn a spot on the plane to America for Liverpool’s preseason tour.
While his season started well, Lewis unfortunately suffered a knee injury in September followed by another setback, causing him to miss the next four months.
“He was due to come back, he was fit and he was due back in with the squad, but unfortunately he picked up the injury again which was horrible for him,” said Neil Critchley, the U23 manager. “It wasn’t nice to share that with him but that is football and it is part and parcel of the game.”
Lewis was finally fit again just in time for the FA Cup replay against Shrewsbury Town. His return cam just in time, as Yasser Larouci had also gone down injured, so Adam Lewis was finally in line for his first team debut.
“He got over that [injury] and he got his rewards the other night so I was delighted for him and his family,” said Critchley, who managed the game. “That was a really special moment for Adam and you could see how much it meant to him. I was so made up for him.”
While Lewis impressed, he did manage to pick up a slight knock in the first half. The youngster, however, was not about to come off the field when he finally had his chance.
“There was no chance of me getting off that pitch,” said Lewis. “It’s a dream true and whether I’m injured or not, I’m carrying on.”
